PROJECTS

Schottenstein Center at Ohio State

Columbus OH

The Jerome Schottenstein Center at Ohio State is the well-known local home to sporting events, concerts, and a wide variety of family shows and touring productions. This complete renovation has made the control room a true state-of-the-art facility. The room now includes two slightly modified RACKBLOCKS consoles; a 9BAY front console with an extended switcher position, and a 7BAY rear console with the audio board recessed into the worksurface. Our new consoles and the updated equipment dramatically improved the production team’s capabilities, and the modular design of RACKBLOCKS components makes changing positions as easy as swapping equipment turrets and filler panels (tool-free…!), if ever, whenever needed, in the future. And RACKBLOCKS’ low pricing helped keep the project within budget https://bit.ly/337SI3u. These room-at-work images were generously provided by the production staff at OSU. Love the chairs…!

WTTG News

Washington DC

Eastboard designed a sculptural Assignment Desk as the centerpiece of a unique, on-air newsroom set at this major east coast Fox station. Comprised of two large, dual-sided, mirror-image workstations, this desk combines the critical functional elements required for 24/7 news operations with upscale quality now required in sets for high-definition broadcasting. Since the Assignment Desk was part of a larger set, the final design, size & placement were determined collaboratively, working with the news director and the set designers. Special design elements included curved cabinetry with wrap-around, curved solid-surface worksurfaces, inside and out. The many functional features included interchangeable equipment turrets and filler panels on the desktop, aluminum monitor arm mounting tracks, and extensive wire management. 3D modeling and rendering were critical to the project’s development. Eastboard also remodeled the station’s existing production control room, replacing the old consoles with our RACKBLOCKS system consoles, and the old equipment racks with our four-panel, adjustable-angle FRAMEWALL, which allowed fitting the wall precisely within an existing opening. To keep the 24/7 station on air during renovations, installations were done over sequential weekends, when the room could be down for the longest periods of time.

KFOR DTV

Oklahoma City OK

Sinclair’s Oklahoma City, NBC affiliate, recently upgraded the existing facility by adding a wing to the building, creating four new DTV control rooms and the technical core. RACKBLOCKS in-line consoles, with custom switcher workstations, outfitted both large production suites and the master control room. The audio control workstation required custom engineering and design to support the mammoth audio board, while still allowing open span legroom below. A large, one-piece worksurface, with inlaid monitor arm tracks, rests on the console base. As our client’s plans developed, the adaptability and modular design of RACKBLOCKS consoles allowed for easy configuration changes and quickly determining any budgetary impacts; throughout the process, continuously updated renderings clearly illustrated the different layouts for customer review and evaluation.

Jazz At Lincoln Center

New York NY

With Sirius XM, Eastboard Consoles recently completed design, fabrication, and installation of new control room furniture for the Jazz At Lincoln Center facility in New York. This renovation of four combination production / on-air studios took place sequentially, with our staff installing one room about every two weeks, depending upon our client’s changing schedule. The final room was completed in mid-December.

Design development relied extensively on 3D modeling and rendering, for size and shape layouts, ADA clearances, and finish selection. The customer had specified patterned-metal laminates for the cabinetry bases, and several options were illustrated for review. The overall shapes required a few design iterations to arrive at the final approved designs.

WEOS Radio

Geneva NY

Eastboard designed, built and installed the new home of WEOS public radio, broadcasting from the campus of Hobart & William Smith University, in Geneva NY; this on-air studio is located within the student hub building, behind a large glass window, and visible 24/7. Available space was limited, and 3D modeling was crucial in determining the ADA-compliant space for host and guests, and then developing the final shape of the solid-surface studio desk, which incorporated several unique design elements. First, the desktop is made in two sections, which allows for replacing only the lower section to accommodate any audio board changes. And the second unique feature of this project is the inclusion of 3D printed components: the four small desktop equipment housings have 3D printed sides (with screw mounts already printed in place), manufactured from black ABS plastic; they are Wheatstone GPC-3 equivalents. Along the window wall, a raised sideboard incorporates a base equipment rack and storage cabinet, and the swiveling equipment rack on top has adjustable tension to set the perfect amount of turning resistance. Brushed stainless steel tube legs complete this sleek, modern talk radio studio.

WIPR Production Control

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Our RACKBLOCKS system consoles were specified by WIPR, in San Juan Puerto Rico, for their new production control room. In addition, Eastboard provided a matching, custom audio workstation. For all customer-assembled projects, we include both printed and video instructions, and prior to crating and shipment, each console is staged to verify proper fit of all components, then all parts are color-coded to assure our clients’ success. For PCR, we provided two (2) 5BAY RACKBLOCKS consoles, with 4RU turrets and 9RU baseracks throughout; a custom switcher frame and inset rack frame completed the forward console’s worksurface. In audio, the two-level workstation supports an exceptionally tall audio board, incorporates an expansive speaker shelf, and provides a 4RU turret. The open base includes wire management, and allows for creating another equipment bay, if needed.

KIRO: Ignite Control Room

Seattle WA

Shown here just after the console installation, this new Ignite control room for KIRO mimics the room we designed, built, and installed at sister station WFTV in Orlando FL. This one has a mirror-image layout, a longer rear console, and the same five-panel, pivoting monitor wall that allows for precise adjustment of viewing angles. The interchangeable, easily movable elements of RACKBLOCKS© provide the flexibility to modify the consoles later, as needs may change. All the consoles and the monitor wall hav¬e slotted tracks throughout, to mount monitor arms or other accessories, internal cable management, and fully enclosed bases.

We also provided many custom touches on this project, such as a recessed Vinten controller, angled so that the top of the joystick was just below counter level. Since the room was under renovation, we worked exclusively from the architectural plans to determine the ADA clearances and maximum console sizes, and used 3D modeling to illustrate the layouts. KIRO’s new Ignite control room will be operational in the spring of 2014.

WSOC: Digital Newsroom

Charlotte NC

For this project, we expanded our exclusive, two-sided newsroom workstation design from sister station WFTV’s project, by adding a second row of equipment turrets along the workstation’s outer face. Editors and producers sit facing one another, separated by a three-track-wide, T-slot mounting rail, so that monitor arms can be positioned wherever desired, with monitors facing in either direction, leaving one track available to attach privacy screens or other accessories. Two of these 30–long workstations anchored WSOC’s new digital newsroom, each with removable, swappable equipment turrets that preparing the consoles for any future changes. Recessed power strips and dual internal cableways keep all connections organized and accessible. We built and installed a total of twelve custom consoles, including production and reporter’s pods, a web media workstation, and a bi-level, multi-curved Assignment Desk. Developing and producing these complex designs relied heavily on the use of 3D modeling and rendering, for space planning, client visualization, and manufacturing support. Operations began from the renovated newsroom in early 2014.

Brookhaven National Laboratory: Synchrotron II Control Room

Upton, NY

Eastboard converted an existing office at Brookhaven National Laboratories, on Long Island, into a central control room for the National Synchrotron Light Source II particle accelerator project. A combination of RACKBLOCKS© consoles and traditional cabinetry equipped this control room with the technical and administrative capabilities required to ensure safe, reliable operation of the synchrotron. After having completed a rigorous safety instruction course, and receiving our work-on-site certification, we installed the consoles and furniture over the following two-day period. Special details included a rounded base cabinet with curved doors, and a custom enclosure for D-size drawing files. For long-wearing durability and comfort, all worksurfaces were finished with beveled, solid-surface edges. Once again, 3D modeling and rendering proved crucial to determining and refining the final furniture designs, layout, and finishes. This control room, and the particle accelerator it controls, will be operational in early 2015.

WFTV: Digital Production Center

Orlando, FL

WFTV, ABC’s Orlando FL station, added an Ignite© system, and upgraded their production center using Eastboard’s RACKBLOCKS© consoles & monitor walls. The modular RACKBLOCKS©system has already allowed WFTV to reconfigure the equipment layout to meet operator preferences. The monitor walls feature our exclusive, pivoting monitor mounting panels, which allow infinite angular adjustment to achieve optimum viewing angles. Five RACKBLOCKS© consoles and three free-standing monitor walls were used in these three control rooms. Integration took place concurrently with the furniture installation, which allowed 24/7 station operations to be maintained. This project also included a very unique, custom-designed, 30′-long, two-sided producer workstation, where editors and producers sit facing one another, separated by a three-track-wide, T-slot mounting rail, so that monitor arms can be positioned facing in either direction, and privacy screens or accessories can also be attached. All the equipment turrets are removable and swappable, preparing the console for any future changes. Recessed power strips and dual internal cableways keep all connections organized and accessible. Developing and producing this complex design relied heavily on 3D modeling and rendering, for both client visualization and manufacturing support.
